AI Engineer path · lesson 1 of 124Compare ML engineering with AI engineering row by row, climb the adaptation ladder from a prompt edit to a pretraining run, and see which rung a problem actually belongs on.

The clearest structural difference between ML engineering and AI engineering is that:
The short version
Classical ML is forging your own engine. AI engineering is building the car around an engine you bought — the hard, valuable work is the drivetrain, the brakes, and knowing how the thing behaves at speed, not the block itself.

What Is AI Engineering?
AI engineering is building applications on top of foundation models you did not train. The discipline exists because model capability became a commodity you can reach with an HTTP request, which moved the hard part of the work from producing a model to making one behave.
The reversal
The three layers of the stack
The adaptation ladder
Effort and control rise together, so climb only when the rung below has demonstrably failed:
prompting → context / RAG → tools & agents → finetuning → pretraining.
Why the demo is not the product
Once a prototype takes an afternoon, the prototype is worth nothing. What compounds is the eval suite, the labelled failure cases, and the feedback data — assets that take months and cannot be copied.
