Bars are on a log scale spanning eight orders of magnitude, because a linear axis cannot show a gradient that has fallen by a factor of 106.
    Vanishing gradients
Gradient standard deviation at the first layer is 2.32e-8 against 2.34e-1 at the last. The lower layers receive almost nothing, so they barely move during training — which is exactly the failure that stalled deep networks in the early 2000s.
