    Reasoning Models & Test-Time Compute

    The idea
A standard model is a contestant forced to blurt the answer instantly; a reasoning model gets scratch paper and a timer. Same brain — the scratch paper is what lets it catch its own mistakes. Test-time compute is buying more minutes on that timer.
    How to use
Run the same hard question with thinking off and on, then drag the budget slider to find where the accuracy curve flattens.
Q: A bat and a ball cost $1.10 total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. What does the ball cost?

    Key insight

A reasoning model is not a different kind of intelligence — it's the same next-token machine given room to draft, verify, and revise before committing. The chain of thought is scratch work: it exists to catch errors, and most APIs hide or summarize it in the reply.

What is the "thinking" or "reasoning trace" a model emits?

    The short version

A standard model is a quiz contestant forced to blurt the answer instantly; a reasoning model gets scratch paper and a timer. Same brain — the scratch paper is what lets it catch its own mistakes. Test-time compute is buying more minutes on that timer.

    Reasoning Models & Test-Time Compute

A reasoning model spends extra tokens thinking before it answers — drafting, checking, and backtracking in a (usually hidden) chain of thought. This buys accuracy with test-time compute: paying more per question instead of training a bigger model.

    How it works

The model is trained (largely with reinforcement learning on verifiable problems) to produce long private reasoning before the final answer.
Thinking tokens are ordinary output tokens you usually don't display — APIs expose a budget or effort dial (low/medium/high, or a max-token cap).
More budget → higher accuracy on multi-step problems, with diminishing returns: the curve is steep for the first few thousand tokens, then flattens.

    Engineering rules of thumb

Billing: thinking tokens are billed at the output rate — a generous budget can multiply per-call cost 10-30×.
Latency: a 20k-token think is ~10-15 s before the first answer token; stream a thinking summary to protect UX.
Routing: reasoning for math/debugging/planning; standard for extraction/formatting/chat. Router in front, escalate on failure.
Verify anyway: thinking reduces errors, it doesn't eliminate them — keep evals, schema checks, and guardrails on.
Distill the wins: use reasoning traces as training data for a cheaper model on recurring tasks.
