Observability: Logs, Metrics & Traces
Software Engineer path · lesson 95 of 99Explore the three pillars of observability — logs, metrics, and traces — by simulating a checkout request flowing through a three-service distributed system.
Log stream — no requests yet
Hit "Send Request" to generate log output.
Logs are discrete, timestamped, human-readable events — perfect for answering "what exactly happened at 12:00:01?" but not great for spotting trends across thousands of requests.
Logs, metrics or traces?

Which observability pillar is best for answering "What exactly happened at 12:00:01.310 inside the payments service?"
The short version
Logs are like a courier's detailed delivery diary — every doorbell ring and handoff written down. Metrics are the dashboard gauges on the delivery van — packages per hour and on-time rate at a glance. A trace is the GPS route the package actually followed, showing every stop and how long each leg of the journey took.
