The Machine Learning Landscape
Three independent axes place almost any ML system: supervision, batch versus online, instance versus model-based. Plus the two things that actually sink projects — a poll of ten million people that called an election wrong, and a validation setup that cannot tell overfitting from a data mismatch.

How much and what kind of supervision the system gets during training.

Whether it must be retrained from scratch on the full dataset, or can learn incrementally from data arriving in sequence.

Instance-based
Model-based
Whether it compares new data to remembered instances, or builds a model of the training data and predicts from that.
Spam filter: It learns from emails already labelled spam or ham, keeps learning from what users mark, and generalises through a learned model rather than by comparing each new email to stored ones. Géron uses exactly this example: "an online, model-based, supervised learning system."
Ten million people, and still wrong
24%
61%
The gap between the two bars is 18.9 points, while the sampling noise is ±0.032 points — roughly 586× smaller. That ratio is the entire lesson. Collecting a bigger sample shrinks the noise and does nothing whatsoever to the bias, which is why a poll of ten million people called the 1936 election wrong.
