    Intelligent Document Processing (IDP)

    The idea
IDP is a factory line for documents. Raw pages come in one end (ingest), get read (OCR), sorted into regions (layout), fields lifted out to a schema (extract), checked (validate), and anything the machine is unsure about goes to a human at the last station — before shipping structured data downstream.
    How to use
Press Advance to walk the pipeline; then adjust the HITL threshold and watch which fields route to review.

    Key insight

Each stage is a place where documents fail differently: OCR misses stamps and handwriting, layout mis-groups multi-column pages, extraction guesses at ambiguous fields, validation catches types but not semantics. The value of a pipeline is knowing where the failures live — that is what a labeled test set per stage gives you.

What is the primary output of the OCR stage?

    The short version

IDP is a factory line for documents. Raw pages come in (ingest), get read (OCR), sorted into regions (layout), fields lifted out to a schema (extract), checked (validate), and anything the machine is unsure about goes to a human at the last station — before shipping structured data downstream.

    In more depth

    Intelligent Document Processing (IDP)

IDP turns unstructured pages (PDFs, scans, images) into structured records with confidence per field.

    Standard pipeline

1.Ingest — page split, dpi normalize, deskew.
2.OCR — text with character-level coordinates. Metrics: CER (character error rate), WER (word error rate).
3.Layout parsing — group tokens into blocks: header, paragraph, table, footer. Tables preserve rows/columns.
4.Schema extraction — map layout blocks to typed fields (invoice_id, date, line_items[]). LLM (vision or text) with a schema, or a dedicated extraction model.
    5.Validation — types, ranges, cross-field business rules.
6.HITL routing — fields under a confidence threshold surface for human review.

    Key production metrics

Straight-through processing rate — fraction of documents finished with no human touch.
Per-field precision at threshold — how confidently the extractor is right on the fields it auto-approves.
HITL queue drain rate vs arrival — corpus drift shows up here first.

    Multi-modal vs classical

Vision LLMs handle long-tail documents without per-template work; classical OCR + LLM is cheaper per-document at volume. Real systems combine them.
