Database Normalization
Software Engineer path · lesson 51 of 99Learn how to split flat, denormalized tables into 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF to eliminate data redundancy.
Unnormalized Form (UNF)
Repeating groups in single columns
Problem: Non-Atomic Values
The "Items" column contains lists (repeating groups), violating the atomicity principle. This leads to difficult queries, inconsistent data entry, and storage waste.
| OrderID | Customer | Items (Product, Price, Category) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Alice | ['Laptop, 1000, Tech', 'Mouse, 50, Tech'] |
| 2 | Bob | ['Desk, 300, Furniture'] |

Which Normal Form ensures that there are no "transitive dependencies" (e.g., A depends on Primary Key B, but C depends on A)?
The short version
Normalization is like organizing a messy closet. Instead of having shoes, shirts, and pants piled in every drawer (Flat Table), you designate specific drawers for specific items (Separate Tables). If a shirt changes size, you only update it in one place.
